Whether it’s for our own sanity or to mitigate climate change, the need for green spaces in our cities has never been more pressing. As global populations rise and the trend towards urbanisation increases, space is at a premium.
But just above our heads there’s an abundance of free space - rooftops. In many places, like the Netherlands, they’re often flat – making them the ideal locations for a natural climate-meets-tech solution.
These skytop nature havens boost biodiversity in built-up urban environments – providing homes for insects, as well as more flowers for bees and wasps to collect and transfer pollen. Many Dutch cities are transforming their tram and bus stops into Bee Stops. And even their famous canal boats.
Green “Living” roofs means cooler cities. They’re also a perfect spot to install solar panels and wind turbines, helping cool the planet.
In the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam, patients are benefitting from the power of nature. Research has shown that greenery boosts the recovery chances of hospital patients.
Whether it’s for our own health, for recreation, to boost nature or to mitigate climate change, the need for green spaces in our cities has never been more pressing. The only limit is our imagination.
