Speed of Rust

A ticking time bomb about to spill…

Our latest WaterBear Original reveals one man’s memory of what happened to the FSO Safer, holding 1.1 Million barrels of oil and moored off the coast of Yemen. This real-life event not only highlights the risks of oil spills, but it also underscores the global issue of rusting, abandoned ships that threaten our environment.

The story of the Safer poses the question of who should be held accountable for the end of life of ships.

Organisations such as NGO Shipbreaking Platform and Greenpeace have urged policymakers and industry leaders to take action and demonstrate their commitment to safe and responsible ship recycling. Civil society came together and campaigned successfully to prevent an environmental catastrophe by removing the oil from the Safer, but more still needs to be done to ensure discarded ships don’t kill people or pollute the environment.

This film is a call to action for accountability in the fossil fuel industry. It tells the story of the Safer, an example of corporate neglect. Oil and shipping companies, that reap billions of dollars profits, must step up to ensure their ships are safely dismantled at the end of their lives, rather than leaving communities and our oceans to bear the risk.
