GLISPA was launched in 2006, at the 8th Conference of the Parties, to the CBD (COP 8 parallel to the adoption of the Programme of Work on Island Biodiversity. 

Its mission is to promote actions for island conservation and sustainable livelihoods by inspiring leadership, catalyzing commitments, and facilitating collaboration. GLISPA is governed by a board and has 5 political leaders as chairs. It has more than 45 members and over 200 other organisations and islands in the broader network.

GLISPA itself is a model for island engagement and commitments (Micronesia Challenge, Caribbean Challenge Initiative, Hawaii’s Aloha+ Challenge, the Island Resilience Initiative, Debt for Adaptation Swaps and the like) and has always focused on mobilising implementation of the convention in an island context.
GLISPA has worked with members and friends and engaged more than 35 countries in launching commitments. Islands and those organisations that work with islands see GLISPA as their partnership. It has additionally provided the environment to foster over a decade of institutional knowledge and capacity of island leadership in international processes to maintain coordinated action. Since our launch in 2006, the Partnership has engaged high-level leaders to catalyze US$150 million for island action and assisted 35+ countries to launch or strengthen major sustainable island commitments.

The partnership is focused on:
• Mobilising high level political will for island commitments on resilience and sustainabi9lity.
• Building and strengthening partnerships that implement global conservation and sustainability goals on islands.
• Helping members strategise to bring global attention to and support for island solutions and initiatives, especially at major international meetings and conferences.
